On 7 October 2026, South Kazakhstan Medical Academy hosted a scientific seminar with the participation of Dr. Mohammad Reza Saeb, a researcher at the Medical University of Gdańsk (Poland) and GBD Collaborator. The seminar focused on the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) — an international research system that assesses the health status of populations worldwide, as well as the impact of diseases and risk factors on health.
The seminar was attended by Heads of Departments, research staff and researchers, as well as PhD students. During the event, the participants discussed the key principles of the GBD system, population health metrics, DALYs, risk factors, and age- and sex-specific patterns.
Using Kazakhstan as an example, cancer indicators for 1990–2023 were analyzed, including incidence, mortality, DALYs, and risk factors. The seminar also demonstrated how GBD data can be used for scientific research and for identifying research priorities.
At the end of the seminar, participants discussed the integration of GBD data with local medical data, as well as the development of research projects and scientific publications.
The event was aimed at strengthening international scientific cooperation at SKMA and developing researchers’ competencies in the use of modern analytical tools.
