“Prevention of Obesity and Diabetes in Children and Adolescents”

On May 6, 2026, assistants of the Department of General Practice-3, G.M. Onlasbekova and G.Sh. Baymakova, together with 6th-year medical interns of group GPIG-08-25, organized an event for 8-9 th-grade girls of IT School-Lyceum No. 80 located in the Nursat district of Shymkent. The event was held on the topic: 1.“Prevention of Obesity and Diabetes in Children and Adolescents” within the framework of “ 2.A Healthy Lifestyle is the Key to Health”.
Purpose: The responsibility of parents is to establish proper nutrition and physical activity habits in children from an early age, prevent diseases, strengthen physical and mental health, instill moral values in students, and help them understand that today’s students are the future. It is also important to teach children to value and maintain their health from a young age.
A healthy lifestyle is, first of all, an active approach aimed at maintaining and strengthening health. As it is rightly said, “A healthy person is the most valuable creation of nature.” Medical interns clearly and thoroughly explained to students the importance of proper nutrition, adequate sleep, physical activity, outdoor walks, and avoiding harmful habits.
1. Proper, balanced nutrition Proper nutrition ensures the healthy growth and development of a child’s body and helps maintain overall health. It plays a crucial role in longevity and the proper development of the younger generation.
2. Personal hygiene Personal hygiene includes daily practices aimed at maintaining and strengthening health. Information was provided on body care, oral and dental hygiene, maintaining cleanliness at home, and proper skin care.
3. “Prevention of Obesity and Diabetes in Children and Adolescents” The main cause of excess weight gain is the predominance of simple carbohydrates and fats in the diet (bakery products, sweets, desserts, sugary carbonated drinks, fast food, fried foods), where calorie intake exceeds the body’s energy needs, leading to energy imbalance. Excess weight and obesity can lead to both minor and serious health problems:
- gastrointestinal diseases (constipation, diarrhea, gastritis, cholecystitis, pancreatitis, etc.);
- disorders of the cardiovascular system;
- type 2 diabetes mellitus;
- disorders of sexual development;
- endocrine and metabolic disorders;
- musculoskeletal disorders (arthrosis, etc.);
