Department of Surgery and Oncology
In 1993, the Faculty of Medicine was created on the basis of the Shymkent Pharmaceutical Institute, under which the Department of General Surgery was organized. In 1994-1995, the Departments of Faculty and Hospital Surgery were created. In connection with the reorganization of SKGMA in 2009 into SKGFA, these departments were reorganized into Departments of Surgical Disciplines No. 1 and No. 2, which functioned separately until 2012. In 2012, both departments were combined into one Department of Surgical Disciplines, which functioned until July 2020. And in September 2020, it was divided into the Department of Surgery-1 and Surgery-2. In September 2023, the name of the Department of Surgery-2 was changed to "Surgery, Oncology and Traumatology",WithSeptember 2025 in "Surgery and Oncology".
In 2018, SKGFA was reorganized into South Kazakhstan Medical Academy JSC. Department in 1993-1996. headed by prof. Seksenbaev D.S., 1996-1998 Doctor of Medical Sciences Abdiev O.S., in 1998-2001 prof. Seksenbaev B.D., in 2001-2002 prof. Rysbekov M.M., 2002-2006 prof. Tazhimuratov R.T., 2007-2009 prof. Bigaliev M.Kh., 2009-2012 Assoc. Zhumabaev T.Zh., 2013-2018 Assoc. Zhumagulov K.N. From June 2018 to the present, the Department of Surgical Disciplines, now renamed the Department of Surgery and Oncology, was headed by MD, Acting Professor B.A. Abdurakhmanov.

The department offers undergraduate programs, with general surgery taught to 2nd, 3rd, and 4th-year students in the Dentistry program; general surgery taught to 3rd-year students in the Medicine and Pediatrics programs; and fundamentals of surgical diseases taught to 4th-year students in the Medicine program; general surgery taught to 3rd-year students in the accelerated Medicine program; and general surgery taught to 4th-year students in the Preventive Medicine program.Third-year students study the fundamentals of surgical diseases and injury prevention.  
In the internship program "General Medicine", 7th-year students study oncology in general practice andsurgical diseases in the general medical practice; under the program "Surgery" 6th-year students study surgery, under the program "General Medical Practice" 6th-year students of the general medical practice study surgery and oncology. InIn the General Surgery residency program, residents of years 1–3 study general surgery; in the Adult Oncology program, residents of years 1–2 study oncology; and in the Radiation Oncology program, residents of years 1–2 study radiation oncology.
Courses are taught in the Kazakh, Russian, and English languages. The Faculty of Continuing Medical Education also offers specialization and advanced training in surgery and oncology. The department and the National Center for Expertise, a state-owned enterprise with the Right of Economic Management, have approved the department's initiative scientific and technical program: "Improvement and Development of Innovative, Minimally Invasive Technologies in the Treatment of Surgical, Oncological, and Traumatological Patients Using Interventional Radiology, Endovascular Oncology, and Endovideosurgical Interventions." Within this research area, over 100 scientific and methodological publications in medical journals and collections of scientific papers were published between 2018 and 2025, two monographs were issued, the results of over 30 patents for inventions of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Russian Federation were implemented in clinical practice and successfully applied, two copyright certificates were obtained, and 12 master's theses were completed and successfully defended. In 2025, Zh.S. Tumenbaeva successfully defended her doctoral dissertation.
 
 
(РhD)Doctoral student K.U. Sultanov is preparing to defend his dissertation. The results of his scientific research have been presented at more than 20 conferences held both in Kazakhstan and abroad. Integrated academic medical centers were created based on a signed memorandum and agreements with the Tashkent Medical Academy and the Republican Specialized Center of Surgery (RSCS) named after Academician V.Vakhidov of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
We participated in and presented a paper at the 29th International Scientific and Practical Conference "Vakhidov Readings – 2025" on "Innovative Technologies in Surgery." Participation was part of the current memorandum of cooperation between JSC SKMA and the V.V. Vakhidov Russian Scientific and Practical Medical Center of Surgery, which contributes to strengthening international scientific and practical ties and sharing experiences. The paper presented modern methods for the comprehensive treatment of patients with sub- and decompensated liver cirrhosis using innovative technologies. Participation in conferences under the cooperation agreement confirms the importance and potential of international collaboration in surgery and hepatology. Prospects for joint projects and the exchange of experiences were discussed.
On November 11, 2025, the staff of the Department of "Surgery and Oncology," in collaboration with the Public Health Department of the Regional Clinical Hospital of the Turkistan Region, and with the participation of Professor Isa Kama (Kocaeli University of Medicine, Istanbul, Turkey), conducted a master class and a series of lectures on modern methods of treating thyroid diseases using radiofrequency ablation. The event was held under the topic: “Microwave Ablation of Nodular and Cystic Thyroid Lesions” for surgeons, interventional radiologists, oncologists, and endocrinologists. Participants were awarded certificates.
The department has established and regularly runs a student scientific and practical club, "Surgery," whose members participate in annual theoretical and practical olympiads. In 2022, the department successfully held the first intra-university olympiad in surgical disciplines, and in 2023, the first international olympiad.  
October 16-18, 2025The 3rd International Practical Olympiad in Surgical Disciplines was held at SKMA. Students and interns interested in surgical specialties participated in the event, along with department staff who served as the jury and organizers. The Olympiad consisted of several stages, including creative team performances and competitions in surgical knot tying, surgical instrument knowledge, Pirogov Anatomy, desmurgy, tendon suturing, cardiac surgery, plastic, thoracic, and abdominal surgery, craniotomy, hand surgery, and kidney transplantation. Seventeen teams from neighboring and distant countries participated. Following the prestigious surgical Olympiad, the NSA SKMA team won first place.
The SKMA team took third place in the international surgical olympiad "Days of Kazakhstani Medicine in Uzbekistan," held in Tashkent from October 13-17, 2025. The SKMA team also took second place in the 7th Republican Theoretical and Practical Olympiad for Medical University Students "MedUSE" in the Surgery program.
Approval was received for conducting joint scientific research and training master's and doctoral students by the A.N. Syzganov Scientific Center of Surgery of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Republican Center for Transplantology of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the National Scientific Center of Traumatology and Orthopedics named after Academician N.D. Batpenov of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and the Bashkir State Medical University of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation,Republican Specialized Center of Surgery (RSCS) named after academician V. Vakhidov of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Uzbekistan,The Regional Multidisciplinary Clinic, a state-owned enterprise with the right of economic management, is part of the Zhetysu Regional Healthcare Administration. These centers also provide training for residents through academic mobility and clinical internships.
Thanks to the coordinated work of the department's staff, good results in the accreditation of residency specialties have been demonstrated over the past period.
 
Currently, the department employs 1 Doctor of Medical Sciences and 5 Candidates of Medical Sciences. The department has a total of 30 employees, including 4 employees of the educational and support staff. There are 12 full-time employees (46.2%), 14 part-time employees (53.8%). The number of academic degrees held by the department is 6 (23.07%). The clinical sites of the department are the regional clinical hospital, Park Health Surgery, DL-IVF Clinic, City Clinical Hospital No. 1, and the city oncology center. With the participation of the department's employees, modern innovative methods of diagnosis and treatment have been introduced in the clinical sites: videolaparoscopic and videothoracoscopic methods, arthroscopy, endovascular interventions for tumors of various localizations, various reconstructive interventions on large joints.
